Installation
|
You can install GridMagic in one of the following ways:
OTA Installation
- Use your smartphone's internet browser to access http://www.simprit.com/wap.wml
- Click "GridMagic (RIM BlackBerry)" to download the application.
Installation with BlackBerry Desktop Manager
- Download gridmagic_setup.exe from http://www.simprit.com/download.html
- Double-click gridmagic_setup.exe and follow the on-screen instructions to
install GridMagic and its components on your hard drive:

- Connect your BlackBerry smartphone to your desktop computer.
- Start the BlackBerry Desktop Manager and launch the Application Loader.
- Proceed to the Device Application Selection (or Handheld Application Selection) screen.
- Press Add button to add sxo_calc.alx
(this file is located at C:\Program Files\Simprit\GridMagic by default)
to the Application Loader:

- Follow the instructions of the Application Loader Wizard to load GridMagic to your smartphone.
- Reset your smartphone after installation.

GridMagic Editions
|
GridMagic is launched in a fully functional trial mode when you first install it. You can use GridMagic in trial mode for 15 days.
Once the trial is expired, the software will turn into the Community Edition with basic features. You are free to use GridMagic Community Edition for non-commercial personal or educational purposes.
You can also convert the software to the Community Edition during the trial period:
- Launch GridMagic on your smartphone.
- In the workbook list, click About on the menu.
- Click the Convert to Community Edition button.
- Click Yes.
To use GridMagic for commercial purposes, you can choose to purchase GridMagic Standard or GridMagic Professional.

Registration
|
If you have previously installed GridMagic (trial or Community Edition) on your smartphone, you are not required to re-install the software when you decide to purchase GridMagic. You just need to follow the following instructions to register the software:
- Locate your device ID. Launch GridMagic on your smartphone, click About on the menu. Note down your device ID shown in the About screen.
- Make payment. Visit the product page at http://www.simprit.com/gridmagic/ and look at the purchase information section to understand how to purchase the product and make your payment online.
- Obtain the registration key. Your registration key to unlock the software will be generated to you immediately after your payment is made and cleared.
- Register the GridMagic software with the steps listed in the following section.
Registering the GridMagic software
- Launch GridMagic.
- Click About on the menu.
- Click the Register button, or click Register on the menu.
- In the Registration Key dialog box, enter your registration key EXACTLY as it appears on your registration acknowledgement email
and press Enter.
You will have a registered version of GridMagic once you have successfully registered the software with a valid registration key.

Working with Files

Create a new workbook
- In the workbook list, click New on the menu.
Open a workbook
- In the workbook list, navigate to the workbook you want to open.
- Open the workbook in one of the following ways:
- Press Enter.
- Click Open on the menu.
- Click the trackball.
Delete a workbook
- In the workbook list, navigate to the workbook you want to delete.
- Press Backspace, or alternatively, Click Delete on the menu.
- Click the Delete button.
Rename a workbook
- In the workbook list, navigate to the workbook you want to rename.
- Click Rename on the menu.
- Type a new name over the current name.
- Press Enter.
Duplicate a workbook
- In the workbook list, navigate to the workbook you want to duplicate.
- Click Duplicate on the menu.
Filter workbook list by a category

- In the workbook list, click Filter on the menu.
- Check the category you want to filter (by pressing Space).
Remove filter
- In the workbook list, click Filter on the menu.
- Click Clear Selection on the menu.
Find a workbook

- In the workbook list, click Find on the menu.
- Type the workbook name you are searching for.
- Press Enter.
- Workbooks that match the name will be displayed.
To clear the find result, click Reset Find on the menu.
Moving Around in a Workbook or Worksheet
Move between cells
In the current workbook, roll the trackwheel or trackball to move between cells on a worksheet. For smartphones that have a trackwheel, you can also hold the Alt key and roll the trackwheel to move in a different direction. The moving direction can be customized in Options.
Page scrolling

In the current workbook, enable Page scrolling in one of the following ways:
- Press Space then press P.
- Click Enable Page Scrolling on the menu.
- Hold Alt key and press Enter. ***
You can then roll the trackwheel or trackball, to move between pages. For smartphones that have a trackwheel, you can also hold the Alt key and roll the trackwheel to move in a different direction.
To stop page scrolling, use one of the following ways:
- Press Space then press P.
- Click Disable Page Scrolling on the menu.
- Hold Alt key and press Enter. ***
Find data

- Click Find on the menu, or alternatively, press Space then press F.
- Enter the data you want to search for and specify your search options.
- Press Enter.
If the data is found, Find Next will appear in the menu. You can use Find Next to continue searching for the same data in the worksheet.
Go to a specific cell
- In the current workbook, click Go To on the menu, or alternatively, press Space then press G.
- Type the cell, row or column you want to go to.
- Press Enter.
Move by one block of data within a row or column
- In the current workbook, click Go To on the menu, or alternatively, press Space then press G.
- Select Turn End mode on then press Enter.
- Scroll to move by one block of data.
Go to a recently visited cell
- In the current workbook, click Go To on the menu, or alternatively, press Space then press G.
- Scroll to one of the recently visited cells in the list that you want to go to.
- Press Enter.
Zoom on a worksheet
This feature is supported in GridMagic Standard and GridMagic Professional.

In the current workbook, hold Shift key and roll the trackwheel or trackball to zoom in or out on the worksheet.
Or alternatively,
- Switch to Zoom mode in one of the following ways:
- Press Space then press Z.
- Click Zoom In/Out on the menu.
- Roll the trackwheel/trackball, or alternatively, click Zoom In or Zoom Out on the menu.

To stop zooming in Zoom mode, press Escape, or alternatively, click Stop Zooming on the menu.
Full screen view
This feature is only supported in GridMagic Professional.

In the current workbook, click Full Screen on the menu.
Or alternatively, press Space then press W.
To switch to normal view, click Normal View on the menu.
Or alternatively, press Space then press W.
You can change the screen view behavior in Options:
- Close the current workbook and go back to the workbook list screen.
- Click Options on the menu.
- Click General Options.
- Choose the Startup screen view you want.
Switch to another worksheet in a workbook

- In the current workbook, click Sheets on the menu, or alternatively, click the trackball and click Sheets on the menu.
- In the worksheet list, navigate to the worksheet you want to switch to.
- Open the workbook in one of the following ways:
- Press Enter.
- Click Open on the menu.
- Click the trackball.
Alternatively, press Space then press the worksheet number (e.g. 3) you want to open.

Close a workbook
- In the current workbook, press Escape, or alternatively, click Close on the menu.
Manipulating Workbooks and Worksheets
Save a workbook
- In the current workbook, click Save on the menu, or alternatively, click the trackball and click Save on the menu.
Save a backup copy of a workbook
- In the current workbook, click Save As on the menu.
- Type a name for the workbook.
- Press Enter.
Insert a new worksheet
- In the current workbook, click Sheets on the menu, or alternatively, click the trackball and click Sheets on the menu.
- Click Insert on the menu.
- Type the new worksheet name.
- Press Enter.
Delete a worksheet from a workbook
- In the current workbook, click Sheets on the menu, or alternatively, click the trackball and click Sheets on the menu.
- Navigate to the worksheet you want to delete.
- Press Backspace, or alternatively, click Delete on the menu.
- Click the Delete button.
Rename a worksheet
- In the current workbook, click Sheets on the menu, or alternatively, click the trackball and click Sheets on the menu.
- Navigate to the worksheet you want to rename.
- Click Rename on the menu.
- Type a new name over the current name.
- Press Enter.
Move a worksheet

- In the current workbook, click Sheets on the menu, or alternatively, click the trackball and click Sheets on the menu.
- Navigate to the worksheet you want to move.
- Click Move on the menu.
- In the Before sheet drop-down list, select the worksheet before which you want to insert the moved worksheet.
- Click the OK button.
Freeze worksheet panes
This feature is supported in GridMagic Standard and GridMagic Professional.
- In the current workbook, move to the cell where you want the split to appear.
- Click Freeze Panes on the menu.
To unfreeze panes, click Freeze Panes on the menu.
Assign categories to a workbook

- In the current workbook, click Categories on the menu.
- Check the categories you want to assign to the current workbook (by pressing Space).
- Click Apply on the menu.
Remove categories from a workbook
- In the current workbook, click Categories on the menu.
- Uncheck the categories you want to remove from the current workbook (by pressing Space).
- Click Apply on the menu.
Protect workbook with a password
This feature is supported in GridMagic Professional only.
- In the current workbook, click Workbook Options on the menu.
- Navigate to the Password field.
- Type a password.
- Click Save on the menu.
- Type the password again.
- Press Enter.
Change workbook settings

- In the current workbook, click Workbook Options on the menu.
- Make any changes you want.
- Click Save on the menu.
Note that when Zoom Factor is Global, it refers to the Zoom Factor set in the General Options.
Manipulating Rows, Columns, and Cells
Select a range of cells

- Move to the first cell of the range.
- Hold Alt key and click the trackwheel/trackball, or click Select on the menu.
- Move to the last cell of the range.
Select rows
- Move to the row you want to select.
- Hold Alt key and click the trackwheel/trackball, or click Select on the menu.
- Click Select Rows on the menu.
- Roll the trackwheel/trackball if you want to select more rows.
Select columns
- Move to the column you want to select.
- Hold Alt key and click the trackwheel/trackball, or click Select on the menu.
- Click Select Columns on the menu.
- Roll the trackwheel/trackball if you want to select more columns.
Cancel a selection of cells
To cancel a selection of cells, press Escape; or alternatively, click Cancel Selection on the menu.
Insert cells

- Select a range of existing cells where you want to insert the new cells. (Refer to Select a range of cells.)
- Click Insert Cells on the menu.
- Select Shift cells down, Shift cells right, Entire row or Entire column.
- Click the OK button.
Insert rows
- Select rows immediately below where you want the new rows. (Refer to Select rows.)
- Click Insert Rows on the menu.
Insert columns
- Select columns immediately below where you want the new columns. (Refer to Select columns.)
- Click Insert Columns on the menu.
Delete cells

- Select the cells you want to delete. (Refer to Select a range of cells.)
- Click Delete Cells on the menu.
- Select Shift cells up, Shift cells left, Entire row or Entire column.
- Click the OK button.
Delete rows
- Select the rows you want to delete. (Refer to Select rows.)
- Click Delete Rows on the menu.
Delete columns
- Select the columns you want to delete. (Refer to Select columns.)
- Click Delete Columns on the menu.
Resize cells, rows, or columns

- Select the cells, rows or columns you want to change their heights or widths. (Refer to Select a range of cells, Select rows, and Select columns, respectively.)
- Switch to Resize mode in one of the following ways:
- Press Space then press R.
- Click Resize on the menu.
- Roll the trackwheel/trackball, or hold Alt key and roll the trackwheel to change heights or widths.
In Resize mode, you can also specify the row height or column width you want by:
- Click Resize on the menu.
- Enter the row height or column width you want.
- Click Apply on the menu.

To stop resizing in Resize mode, press Escape, or alternatively, click Stop Resizing on the menu.
Entering and Editing Data

Enter data in a cell
- Move to the cell where you want to enter data.
- Type the data and press Enter.
Edit cell contents
- Move to the cell that contains the data you want to edit.
- Press Enter.
- Make any changes to the cell contents.
- To enter your changes, press Enter. To cancel your changes, press Escape.
Or alternatively,
- Move to the cell that contains the data you want to edit.
- Click Input on the menu.
- Make any changes to the cell contents.
- Click Apply on the menu to enter your changes, or click Cancel on the menu to cancel your changes.
Switch to numeric input mode
Numeric input mode allows you to enter numbers conveniently. To switch to numeric input mode:
- Move to the cell where you want to edit.
- Press Enter.
- Click Numeric Input on the menu.
To exit numeric input mode, click Exit Numeric Input on the menu.
If a cell is formatted as one of the numeric categories (e.g. Number, Currency, Date, Time, etc), GridMagic will automatically switch to numeric input mode when entering data in the cell; otherwise, GridMagic will use the current input mode on the smartphone.
If you want to change this behavior for unformatted cells, you can turn on Auto numeric input based on previous rows. If the Auto numeric input based on previous rows option is turned on, when entering data in a cell, GridMagic will detect data format of the previous rows. If the previous rows are detected as of the numeric categories, it will switch to numeric input mode.
To change the Auto numeric input based on previous rows option:
- In the workbook list screen, click Options on the menu.
- Click General Options.
- Change the Auto numeric input based on previous rows option.
For BlackBerry smartphones with SureType keypad, when you switch to numeric input mode, you can press ! to enter date-related symbols (e.g. /, :, SPACE); or press ? to enter number-related symbols (e.g. -, $, +, %).
Insert a function

- Move to the cell that you want to insert function.
- Press Enter.
- Hold Alt key and roll the trackwheel, or roll the trackball to move to the position you want the function to be inserted.
- Click Insert Function on the menu.
- Click the function you want to insert.
- Complete the function by entering its arguments and press Enter.
Clear contents from cells
- Select the cells, rows, or columns you want to clear. (Refer to Select a range of cells, Select rows, and Select columns, respectively.)
- Press Backspace.
Cut Cell Data
- Move to the cell that you want to cut its data, or select a cut area. (Refer to Select a range of cells.)
- Hold the Shift key and press Backspace, or alternatively, click Cut on the menu.
Copy Cell Data
- Move to the cell that you want to copy its data, or select a copy area. (Refer to Select a range of cells.)
- Hold the Alt key and click the trackwheel/trackball, or alternatively, click Copy on the menu.
Paste Cell Data
- Move to the cell where you want the data to be pasted.
- Hold the Shift key and click the trackwheel/trackball, or alternatively, click Paste on the menu.
Formatting Text and Cells

Format a single cell
- Move to the cell you want to format.
- Click Format Cells on the menu.
- Make changes to the format you want.
- Click Apply on the menu.
Format a range of cells
- Select cells that you want to format. (Refer to Select a range of cells.)
- Click Format Cells on the menu.
- Make changes to the format you want.
- Click Apply on the menu.
Apply format to a range of cells
- Select cells that you want to format. (Refer to Select a range of cells.)
- Click Apply Format on the menu.
- Click the format you want to apply.
Change the text format of the specific text in a cell

- Move to the cell that you want to change its text format.
- Press Enter.
- Hold Alt key and roll the trackwheel, or roll the trackball to move to the character you want to start making selection.
- Hold Alt key and click the trackwheel/trackball to turn on the text selection mode.
- Hold Alt key and roll the trackwheel, or roll the trackball to make selection.
- Click Format Text on the menu.
- Make changes to the format you want.
- Click Apply on the menu.
Managing Categories
Create a new category
- In the workbook list, click Filter on the menu; or alternatively, in the current workbook, click Categories on the menu.
- Click New on the menu.
- Type the new category name.
- Press Enter.
Delete a category
- In the workbook list, click Filter on the menu; or alternatively, in the current workbook, click Categories on the menu.
- Navigate to the category you want to delete.
- Press Backspace.
- Click the Delete button.
Or alternatively,
- In the workbook list, click Filter on the menu; or alternatively, in the current workbook, click Categories on the menu.
- Navigate to the category you want to delete.
- Click Delete on the menu.
- Click the Delete button.
Launching BlackBerry Applications
This feature is supported in GridMagic Standard and GridMagic Professional.
Launch a browser
If a cell contains a web site URL, you can launch the BlackBerry browser and go to the web site in one of the following ways:
- Press Space then press L.
- Click Get Link on the menu.
Make a phone call
If a cell contains a telephone number, you can make a phone call with the number in one of the following ways:
- Press Space then press L.
- Click Call <PHONE NUMBER> on the menu.
Compose an email
If a cell contains an email address, you can compose an email sending to the email address in one of the following ways:
- Press Space then press L.
- Click Compose Email on the menu.
Changing Default Settings

- In the workbook list, click Options on the menu.
- Click General Options.
- Make any changes you want.
- Click Save on the menu.

Working with Email Attachments
|
GridMagic works together with the GridMagic Server to provide the ability to open, edit and send spreadsheets as email attachments on your BlackBerry smartphone anywhere, anytime.
Opening and Editing Email Attachments
- Open a message that attached with Excel workbooks.
- Click Open with GridMagic on the menu.
- Click the attachment you want to edit and then click Open on the menu.
(You can also save the attachment directly to GridMagic by clicking Save on the menu.)
- Make any changes you want.
- Click Save on the menu.
- Type a workbook name and press Enter
To go back to the attachment list, click Close on the menu.
Sending Workbooks as Email Attachments
- In the email message you are composing, click Send via GridMagic on the menu.
- Check the workbooks you want to send as attachment (by pressing Space).
- Click Send on the menu.
Changing Attachment Service Settings

- Launch GridMagic.
- In the workbook list, click Options on the menu.
- Click Attachment Service.
- Make any changes you want.
- Click Save on the menu.
The available options are listed below:

Changing Connection Settings

- Launch GridMagic.
- In the workbook list, click Options on the menu.
- Click Connection Settings.
- Make any changes you want.
- Click Save on the menu.

To test your BIS connection, you can click the Test BIS Connection on the menu.

Synchronizing Data
|
Setting Up SyncManager
SyncManager allows you to synchronize data between your BlackBerry smartphones and your desktop. It is included in the gridmagic_setup.exe installer. You may refer to the Installation with BlackBerry Desktop Manager section on how to obtain and run the installer. Make sure you have run the installer before proceeding with the following steps.
- Launch BlackBerry Desktop Manager and double click the Synchronize (or Intellisync) icon.
- Check the Execute Add-in actions checkbox.
- Click Configure Add-ins button. (For BlackBerry Desktop Manager 4.2, you need to click the Configuration tab first.)
- Check the SyncManager add-in module.

- Click the OK button.
Using SyncManager
- Connect your smartphone to your desktop. Make sure GridMagic is not running.
- Launch BlackBerry Desktop Manager and double click the Synchronize (or Intellisync) icon.
- Click the Synchronize now button.

- Specify your Workbook path.
- Choose the actions you want to perform for each workbook.
- Click the Synchronize button.

Backing Up and Restoring Data

Backup GridMagic data
- Connect your smartphone to your computer.
- Open the BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
- Double-click the Backup and Restore icon.
- Click Advanced.
- If your smartphone is locked, type your password. Click OK.
- In the Device Databases (or Handheld Databases) section, select the SyncManager Database to back up.
- Click the Left-Arrow button.
- On the File menu, click Save As.
- Type a name and select a location for your backup file.
- Click Save.
Restore GridMagic data
- Connect your smartphone to your computer.
- Open the BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
- Double-click the Backup and Restore icon.
- Click Advanced.
- If your smartphone is locked, type your password. Click OK.
- On the File menu, click Open.
- Select a backup file (an .ipd file).
- Click Open.
- In the Desktop File Databases section, select the SyncManager Database to restore.
- Click the Right-Arrow button.
- Click OK.
